1999 Research Drive Begins

The March 13 Prevention luncheon during the state Arc convention served to kick off the fund raising efforts for the annual Arc Research Fund. Chapters and individuals attending this session contributed $9,700 which will be part of the state chapter’s contribution submitted at the national conference during October 21-23 in Nashville Tennessee this fall.

Arc-California chapters have been long-term supporters of the national efforts in funding seed monies for important research projects. Key funding from The Arc Research Fund included early support to the demonstration and evaluation of the phenylketonuria newborn screening test method, and early support to research which demonstrated that the degree of alcohol-related birth defects could vary in persons of different ethnic origins.

Other funded projects included the study of abuse in public health facilities looking for causes and remedies, a study of aging-related differences in persons with mental retardation, and the study of alcohol-use during pregnancy which resulted in the development of “The Arc Test” which accurately verifies maternal alcohol-use through testing of the infant’s first bowel movement.

Projects supported by this fund have produced important outcomes. Research is essential to our continuing efforts to moving forward.

Individuals and chapters may contribute to The Arc Research Fund by sending their donation to: Arc-California, 1225 Eighth Street, Sacramento, CA., 95814.
