Preschoolers Raise Funds

Dateline Whittier

Thirty-five local preschool children participated this spring in the 1997 March of Dimes Team-Walk and their little feet took some big strides to help the MOD foundation improve the health of babies.

The children, 2 to 5 years old, emptied their own piggy banks, solicited pledges for donations from neighbors and relatives, and then walked around a measured course at their preschool to bring in $181 for the fund raiser.

The youngsters averaged about 23 laps around the ribbon-marked 100-yard course.

Five-year-old Cody Leibert didn’t stop walking until he had covered almost three miles, lapping the course 58 times, according to the local newspaper that covered the event. Other walkers were not far behind.

All walkers were equipped with water bottles and provided with fresh fruits. Following the event, the still energetic participants were treated to a hot-dog lunch, courtesy of the nearby Vons Market.
